Interview with the founder of Kinesio Taping method D-r Kenzo Kase

During the 2nd CONGRESS OF PHYSIOTHERAPIST OF MACEDONIA 2016 with International Participation held in hotel "Biser", Struga, a special guest will be D-r Kenzo Kase, the world symbol of Kinesio Taping. And that was more than enough reason to make an interview with him...

К4Т - When have you started thinking and experimenting with the method that would spread in the world of medicine as Kinesio Taping?

D-R KENZO - Well as you know I trained as a chiropractor in the United States. I first began in 1970 to try out elastic taping techniques with my clinic patients. This was particularly to treat elderly osteoarthritis patients who experienced disabling joint pain and stiffness. I could adjust the joint and apply manual therapy to the affected joint but the patient would have problems again in between visits to my clinic. We made Kinesio Tape flexible and breathable like human skin so that they could have comfort and range of motion. It was almost like sending my therapeutic touch home with them.

The first patients to use Kinesio Taping were not athletes but as soon as athletes heard about it they wanted to try it. This is why more people came to know about Kinesio Tape.

К4Т - Can you explain to our readers some details concerning Kinesio Taping and its usage?

D-R KENZO - Kinesio Taping has historically performed four functions: to relieve pain, to correct joint dysfunction, to facilitate or inhibit muscle function, and to address inflammatory and circulatory issues. The taping creates micro spaces between the different tissues so that the fluids in the body move freely and stay clear. We call this Hydrokinetic, where the fluid (hydro) can move (kinetic.)

More recently, I have been working with neurological taping using the EDF (Epidermis – Dermis - Fascia) method on the surface of the skin. Kinesio Taping has always been used in rehabilitation from injury or surgery but we are doing more with the post-surgical options.

К4Т - We can see variety of sports and sportsman using this method. What is its main advantage? The practicality, the effectiveness or something else?

D-R KENZO - I would say all three, but you must remember that high level athletes are a little different than regular patients. They are very sensitive to minor changes that they feel physically, so for an athlete it is an enormous effect to have their muscle or joint or inflammatory area a little more comfortable. I think they might use Kinesio Taping or other therapies, such as the cupping we saw at the Rio Olympics, more often than you or me because of their high sensitivity.

К4Т - Tell us something more about applying Kinesio Taping? Can a pacient do it alone or it must be applied by a specialised physiotherapist?

D-R KENZO - There are some very simple Kinesio Taping applications that people can use to tape themselves, in fact Kinesio makes pre-cut applications for some common complaints. In general it is better to have the therapist assess your condition first to make sure your taping application is the best to make you feel better. Sometimes the place you feel the most pain is not he part of your body that needs taping. After having this advice many people learn from the therapist how to tape themselves at home.

К4Т - Do you consider future advancements of this method?

D-R KENZO - Well as I mentioned we are having great results in post-surgical Kinesio Taping, and the EDF concept for neurological conditions and body pain is very promising. We also offer some advanced specialty courses, for instance in lymphatic Kinesio Taping, for professionals with that specific focus or patient base.

Veterinary Kinesio Taping is also becoming popular, and it is interesting to see the effect on a horse, which does not have a placebo awareness.

К4Т - Is this Your first time to visit Macedonia?

D-R KENZO - It is my second time to visit Macedonia.
